Go to the public library and see if they have the Chilton's Engine Manual for your make of mower engine.

Ive worked on lawntrators and small motors now for well over 12 years - how i learned? Self taught. I took pictures and or drawings of how things ( linkages , ect) were, then methodically took them apart, and reassembled them.
There are repair manuals out there- and websites- try googling them.
