because the gas company's right now don't want better mileage ,and they help control what happens right now, they have a lot of power over what goes on in the states right now,and if cars got that much mileage their production would drop to less than half, and their profits would drop as well,as long as their in control we wont see lower gas prices,we,ll never see it below 2 bucks a gallon ,they,ll see to it that that never happens, its sad but true, they hold the key ,good luck.

Because the majoraty of buyers aren't interested in 80mpg

They want a car that seats 2 or 4 comfortably , is warm in the winter or cool in the summer, has all the electrical gadgets to impress the neighbor , has 300 HP so that it will go faster than the neighbor, They are not interested in economy or"green"

Why? because Dad in the 60's always bought the 4-door Biscayne instead of the Impala Hardtop...

If we didn't need gasoline... then we would have to find something else to replace all those jobs reliant on the gas guzzling auto industry!

(it will take decades for change, even if the auto/oil industry is willing to make the change; but they don't)

In North Carolina the speed limit in most places is 55. I don't want a speeding ticket.
