My grandfather has been passing things on to his children and grandchildren, and my father managed to get an 1855 Quarter Eagle from the deal. It didn't take me long to figure out what it was thanks to wikipedia, but I'm unable to find any site that can give me the approximate value. He's not going to sell it, but we're both just sorta curious as to how much it would go for.

Also, I didn't get a chance to check what mint it was from, but I'll just assume that it was from the most common mint (unmarked).

The mint mark if any is below the eagle and above the 2 1/2 D. In circulated grades from very fine it's value is $165 up to $295 in grade almost uncirculated. In mint state-63 it's value is $1,150. If it has a C mint mark even in grade very fine it's value is over a $1000 and if a D mint mark it is valued of $2,000 in grade very fine. Prices are about what a dealer would pay. PCGS prices are for coins only graded by them and are retails. Hope this helps.

Without seeing pictures it's very difficult for anyone to give you a good answer. A lot depends on the condition of your coin.

1 - Take your coin to a other local coin dealer. It never hurts to get a second opinion. They will be able to tell you so much more by evaluation the condition of the coin. They will also know the amount minted and what it is going for in today's market.

2 - Try posting pictures on this website (there are many experts here that can help you evaluate it - there also may be people willing to buy if you are trying to sell):

3 - Repost this question and include pictures. You can use websites like photobucket.com and include the link in your question.

Good luck!

P.S. Do not clean your coin as this can drastically effect the value.

Based on the price list at pcgs.com/prices your father's coin is probably worth anywhere from $225 to $425. These prices are base on average circulated condition. Also, I discounted the prices at PCGS because they tend to be a little high. These prices are retail not what a dealer would pay for the coin.

You could probably get a more accurate value if you took the coin to a coin dealer.

Congratulations and have fun with your new treasure.
