4200 harmful chemicals & they are so in your face everywhere. I think they should only be sold in pharmacy's as they are a drug anyway.

And now for an intelligent answer. When widespread use of tobacco came into vogue people where not aware of the health risks associated with its use. Therefore there was no concern over the issue. As the world population grew and more and more people used tobacco the tobacco companies thrived and grew becoming an integral part of the world economy. Now do you really want to commit economic suicide by suddenly removing such large part piece from the economy, or worse yet put yet another illegal substance into the hands of the criminal element

the taxes the government get from smokers would pay the annual budget for the nhs 3 times over. plain and simple they are hypocrites siting the health of the nation for raising the price of them every year. they should be banned outright our taxes would go up by around 15% but a lot of people would not be dying of cancer. for the record i am a smoker.

Because people choose to smoke them. If they weren't legal then they would be bought on the black market and you'd have the whole gangster thing to worry about. I think it started off with so many people being addicted so the government can't ban them outright, but they can only wean people off them slowly.

They are never legal, but in a democratic country human-rights can't restrict anybody to smoke.Socially,it is always discarded but politically it is excepted because it is a very big source of revenue too.

it's a multi-billion dollar industry that employs tens of thousands of people who vote and pay income taxes. It would devastate the economy if they were to stop producing and selling cigarettes. so they regulate and "educate".
