Will they bother protesting in front of businesses /andboycott whoever contributes the most money to the war-supporters in congress for instance? Anytime soon.

Or maybe they don't really care about stopping the war. Maybe they're just into themselves and enjoy grabbing 15 minutes of attention in public that gets them nothing but "me, me, me", "look at me!"?

Protesting never has and never will accomplish anything.

protesting isn't effective because there isn't a draft. This war doesn't affect the entire country as deep as it did in past wars when there was a draft and all the sons of America where in danger of dying in a war.

I think that it is amazing that people on here and elsewhere in the country think that people protest the war because it is the "hip" thing to do or because they "hate Bush". What a shallow commentary to basically say that people are doing so for themselves , not because the truly care about the troops and want them out of harms way from a war the NEVER had to happen in the first place.

Non violent protest is important in many ways.

1) It serves as a barometer of public opinion.
2) It gives depth to the meaning of mandate in ways that the binary (1 or 0, left or right, accept or disagree) ballot cannot.
3) It demonstrates the health of a democracy. A society without protests is not a society without dissidence, it is a society drowned in repression.
4) It allows the population to influence policy. When a government ceases to be influenced by its population, it becomes tyrannical. A tyrannical government justifies violence from below.

You see, non violent protest is the way people who disagree with the government have to influence policy and bring issues to the attention of the population at large. The failure of the media to cover this issues will be a substantial factor in its failure and therefore of the degradation of democracy.

Protests never have an immediate outcome. They change the world the only successful way, one mind at a time.

So go out and protest your heart out. I know I will.

Sat Sep15. Go down to DC, go down to Times Sq. Go to your town square! Just go and say what you think, it is your right.

Peace.

One time I offered a Green Peace protester a copy of the Journal of Foreign Affairs dealing with globalization (it presented arguments both for and against, a very interesting and balanced read). It was clear she needed to do some reading on the topic. She turned me down. She said she didn't need to know the facts in order to protest something. I think the same is true with this topic.

The fact that they are out there protesting tells me they know what's going on and are not willing to support it. There's nothing wrong with utilizing your right to protest and free speech. It's more than most people do.
