I knew one was leaking , but they just phoned and told me that all 4 of them are cracked and leaking.

And they told me that it would be 3 hours labor to replace them, since they will have to take the gas tank out to do this.

Does this sound right?

I had my truck in there for replacing a head gasket recall, but now I am going to have to be paying over 400$ now for this!!

well, you have two choices. If your mechanically inclined, have the tools, have a way to safely handle the spilled fuel, you can do it yourself. Or, you can pay to have it done. BUT, you don't have to pay a dealership, you can use a smaller shop that charges less per hour, but it won't be gauranteed, and you never really know what kind of mechanic a private shop is using. If it's a 3 hour job, most dealers charge 89-90 dollars per hour, if they are saying 400 for a 3 hour job, there is an extra 100 dollars in there that I would want them to explain to me first.

It's a truck. Why can't you fix it. It's not that hard to do. Everything is out in the open. I'm sure you can replace the gas lines. You can't trust a dealer. A mechanic at the dealer would cheat his own mother. I worked for a Ford dealership 6 years. I was a rotten SOB.I knew every trick there was. The sad thing is. There is alot of honest money to be made in auto repair. But more money is more money.

They could be telling the truth, but my experience with Toyota dealers is that they are often over zealous. For be it for me to attribute profit motives, duplicvity and greed on their part, but a second opinion might be appropriate. Many a time have I taken my car to a Toyota dealer to be told that this and that needed to be done, but another mechanic looking over the same parts would disagree. The latter would often be right.

I would just get the one hose replaced and then take it to an independent mechanic. Dealerships always gouge people for work on their cars. My mother in law was told by her Mercury dealership that she needed to have the condenser replaced for her air conditioner, which I knew was bull because she was able to have it recharged at a small shop the year before. They told her it would cost her over $1,000 to replace it. It only cost her $80 to have it recharged. When she took it back to the place where she had it recharged before they said the condenser was fine. NEVER trust a dealership!

if i were you id go back to the shop and ask to see them before they changed them, that's a little high for this, and on most vehicles you don't have to drain all the gas just to replace the lines on it,the lines don't cost that much ,i know this because i do this all day long for a living, and gas lines aren't that expensive ,but it being a Toyota their probably going to put originals back on it,but at least ask to see them, that's about an average price for a dealer to charge, they aren't cheap on repairs,,good luck on it.

IF u know anything about fixing cars, u can go rite 2 an auto-part store & buy new hoses & clamps. It won't take u that long...maybe an hour, if u know whut you're doing.....& it will b MUCH cheaper.

They are old enough to need changing. If you are handy, you could as another poster said, change them yourself. If you knew one was leaking, why did you not fix it? Not a safe situation driving with a fuel leak.

fix the hose yourself. Not much can go wrong with the job as long as you don't smoke while gas line is disconnected.
