I know that they usually have independent companies distributing the prizes and handling the entries, but that seems to me like a company hiring its own auditing firm. There seems to be a potential conflict of interest.

Publishers Clearing House got caught a few years ago. Investigators found a dumpster containing entries that did not have magazine orders included. Not sure how they got out of it though. Most claim independent Judges for contests.
