It takes the rest of the world generally 90 day to elect a new prime minister or president. Of course a dictator require 0 days but just a lot of blood.

Actually, I believe some of them start running for re-election right after they get sworn in.

Uh - it doesn't. From the day of election 'til office is taken, its roughly 2 months.

They prepare well in advance by narrowing down the field of candidates - but it doesnt take two years to "elect the president".

I'd like to see a 3-month or 6-month window for US campaigning before the election, myself. This 2-year thing is just ridiculously long.

It takes two years for all those who want the job (and have millions of dollars to back them up) to crawl out of the woodwork and demonstrate just how annoying they can be. Then most of us try to pick the lesser of two evils or just vote "against that one". Believe it or not, 2 years often isn't long enough to decide.
