The biggest thing I've seen is that the world has become so much less stable. Before, Both the US and USSR were creating satellite governments all over the world, with close ties to their own politics and government. But once the USSR fell, all those little satellite states basically fell into chaos as well. Most of the instability we see today is a result of that power vaccuum, as warring factions tried to seize power.
I can't think of another one off hand right now...

The major thing was the loss of balance. Sure there was the imminent threat of Mutually Assured Destruction and all out war but.......
There was balance in a way. The US would support a government or a rebel group and the USSR would do the same. A government would pick a side to get weapons, help with security or be able to sell what they have to maintain an economy. Rebel groups would seek help from the other side for support.
It was more understood. A big thing is that Russia and America are closer regarding western culture and religion. When the one side became ineffective it allowed all of the other smaller groups to be more effective and it has created chaos.

1- With the Soviet threat gone, the Americans are now the world's main superpower. As such, they feel they have free rein to begin or enter conflicts in other countries.
2- The Soviets - who were the menace in the American psyche, have needed to be replaced as the 'enemy'. At this present time the Muslims have taken that place. The scary thing is that it could be North Korea or China next.

I think the biggest thing is the security of Russian weapons, they may not have had the same military tech as the USA but they had some weapons that can do some damage in the hands of terrorists. Also now oil from Russia has basically given the Russians a choke hold on many nations when it comes to foriegn policy.

Capitalism gone wild essentially, chaos from unstable countries and societies settling old grudges, radical islam emerging from the unstability and from under the thumb of previous ruthless dictators aligned either with with Warsaw pact or the west.
But the biggest thing is the USA no longer has a check and balance ....so it now is attempting to spread its ideologies at the barrel of a gun if necessary --ideologies beign Rampant out of control capitalism gone wild, and military imperialism. This has affected americans in the loss of standard of living for average americans and a government headed towards bankruptcy with out of control spending ..most of which is not even spent on the american people, but rather spent as fuel being poured on the fires of chaos to feed furter instability ....and thus further and further draining of moneys from the people to add even more fuel to the vicious cycle.

One would be a loss of the sense of unity this country had. A united effort against a common foe.
Another might be a feeling that now our enemies are not a openly declared and will attack at will from any direction. We knew Soviets, we don't really know our enemies now.
