It's to be a present. She doesn't mind reading books where the main character is a boy, and girls are fine too. She would prefer fantasy.

When I was 10, I really liked The Chronicles of Narnia and A Wrinkle In Time. Harry Potter books would be ok too. I have heard that The Golden Compass and The Eragon books are good, but I haven't read them.

Fantasy, hmm... as long as she doesn't mind a little violence, I would suggest Eragon. It's great, and I don't think it's too visual.
There's also Uglies, which is sorta fantasy, sorta not. I'm not sure what catagory it fits into. It's a bit of science fiction, it takes place in the future, where everyone turns pretty at 16. excellent book really. Also a little violent, but only at times, and not very graphic at all.
Lastly, I suggest the Young Wizards series. The first book is called So You Want To Be A Wizard? It's great, you should look it up. The entire series is amazing... but be warned, character deaths in all of these books! hope this helps!

The Chronicles of Narnia
...my favorites were The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe followed by The Voyage of the Dawn Treader or The Horse and His Boy. Prince Caspian, The Magician's Nephew and The Silver Chair were also good. I'd save The Last Battle...it was my least favorite.

My totally favorite book from 10, through adulthood into old age is still, "The Secret Garden". The movie did not do the book justice. I use to read, "The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew". Also all the horse stories like, "The Black Stallion" Never read fantasy books. Mmm

"A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeline L'Engel.
It is a story of a young girl who is the oddball, who turns out to be just who she is suppose to be, and it is fantasy. It is also, a wonderful, timeless story of friendship and love. It made a huge impact on me when I was 10 and was about 30 years ago. My son who is also 10 recently read it and now I think he has a bit of a crush on the main character Meg. I plan on giving it to my niece when she is old enough.
Peace.

Get her the original Wizard of Oz series. The books were much different from the movie and I think she'd love Baum. I believe there were more than 16 in the series and then a woman took over writing them for awhile.
