Contrary to some opinions, the Teachers Union does not control the curriculum. The No Child Left Behind Act was produced through collaboration with Ted Kennedy but that, also does not set the curriculum.
Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education and made it a Cabinet level department. That was the beginning of the problem. The Federal Government has no right to influence the curriculum of state run public schools. But (and it is a big BUT) they use the same corrupt method to bypass the Constitution they always use.
The Federal Government does this by grant money. It gives states big hunks of Federal funds for education. However, that money comes with strings attached. If you take the Federal money you have to do whatever the Federal Government mandates or risk loosing that funding. The results? You will use particular textbooks, teach particular subjects, use particular teaching methods etc.
The problem has many, many causes but the root cause is Federal funding. Someday the American population will realize that it would not need Federal funding if the Federal Government would quit taking our money in taxes!
So, the Federal Government takes away a large portion of your money, then they give some of it back with strings attached. Good Deal, huh?

Universities could be autonomous. that's fairly between the definitions of a school. i comprehend this is no longer accompanied, yet for universities to artwork they could be autonomous from the two the government and firms. i think of your college is in all threat too tied with firms, which for sure does not artwork. My college, on the different hand, has the subject that that's purely too controlled by the government. ideally, a school could be funded by the government, however the government could have not any say interior the college's administration.

Yes, and it has gotten so bad that I refuse to let my children attend public school. This is so important to me that I juggle a full time job, a home, and teaching my own children, rather than have to worry about all the truly disturbing things going on in public schools these days.
The curriculum has been distorted, the teacher's make their political ideologies known to the students. The morality of the educator's has become frightening...I could go on all day about the evils of public "un"-education.

katydid, the teachers unions control the school system, not the President.
Duh! Just look at your kids math home work. It asks such ridiculous questions as to whether such and such is far to the one with very little, socialism. The teachers union (more libs than cons), all unions; socialist! Incremental, systematic intrusion is what is really taught in the government school system.

It was Horace Mann who said, "We who are engaged in the sacred cause of education are entitled to look upon all parents as having given hostages to our cause."
Ask yourself - why is it that the public schools, have for years preached this multiculturalism garbage that all cultures' values are "equal," and that American values of individual rights, economic liberty, and limited government are "selfish" or arrogant?
The libs have successfully pressured publishers to revise textbooks to better reflect multicultural values and they have re-written our history books into "PC" acceptable forms of propaganda.............. just as Mao and Hilter did. Most of the 18-30 years olds in this country have been indoctrinated their whole lives have no clue as to what values this country was REALLY founded on.
The PC crowd will stop at nothing to achieve their goals even if it means rewriting history to fit their worldview.
Oh.......and those 18-30 year olds--They now able to vote.... scary isn't it?

Yes, and it's 'progressively' gotten worse over the years. The mind control and dumbing down of our public school system is a real threat and has been for a number of years.
Edit:
The downfall and indoctrination that takes place within our public school system began LONG before Bush's "No Child Left Behind" program began. Blaming Bush is merely a cop out for a system that is a complete failure.

Suth... gets my vote. You are absolutely right.
And it will not get any better until we as a people stand up and VOTE the Socialists OUT.
Freedom to choose what we believe is the American way, they took that choice away from our children.
It is time we give it back.

Considering the US ranks 18 out of 24 (in developed nations, way behind South Korea and Japan) in education, and continues to decline, perhaps it would be wise to investigate the "no child left behind" policy Mr. Bush implemented. Our students are not being educated as they should be. His policy has been a failure.
A well-educated mass is an informed mass and I'm sure that frightens Mr. Bush. He has much more control if we remain ignorant of what's really going on.
