... if all companies had a single, standardized application form, so one could just fill theirs out, print out several copies, and distribute them to various places of business?

I know that some companies want to make sure that the applicant is willing to put forth the effort to fill out their forms, but from past experience I've found that some of the nicest application forms produce some of the most shoddy workers.

So, why not? What harm would having a standardized application system cause?

I don't really see any harm it would cause, but I know, as a person in a hiring position, I would NOT consider an application "printed out" - If you don't care enough or aren't interested enough in the position to fill out an application for it, I'm not interested in you as an employee. I'd really like to see some enthusiasm for the job!

Have a professional do a high quality resume for you and just turn that in instead of the application.

They'll probably think you're over qualified.
