I just have some questions about feeding a child under 1. My daughter will be 4 months old in 2 days. I have just started introducing rice cereal. every other day in the evening next week will start evey day. I see the doc. on monday so i will ask her too but i just wanted to know what some of you did. When do I start jarred foods and when I do, how much in a day and when? Also, when do I start table foods- foods that we eat in small pieces? when i do start those, will i totally eliminate jarred food? how much formula should a baby drink when eating jarred food and table food up to 1 year old? thanks!! just bored at work and figured i'd get some input!

Okay, this is a cute one to answer. Your daughter is old enough to try rice cereal. After that you may introduce some of the jars of baby food slowly, giving her a few baby spoonfuls to she how she likes it. Dont introduce too many tastes at a young age. You may get to the point where you are giving her three different jars, a small amount from each jar, storing the rest in the refrigerator. She is too young to down a full jar of baby food, but by a year, she probably can eat a small jar of baby food. Do not overfeed her. Also, dont forget she will get calories in her milk/formula too.
Can give your daughter perhaps 4 oz with food. And you can supplement with 4 oz of 1 tsp sugar in water.
You can buy a small food processor at Lowe's Home Depot for under $10. A good investment. After her teeth are in, you can take the food you make for your meals and grind it in the grinder for her, adding milk or water to thin it out if it is too dry and chunky. A little bit more work but then you know exactly what she is getting in her food since you made it.
Try giving her a vegetable as well as a fruit so she doesn't get just sugary products. You want to introduce those foods that she should eventually like to have a balanced diet.
Giving your child koolaid cookies and ice cream, esp. for a reward is not good. Try fruit drinks, even thinned out with water (many fruit drinks can be very watered down and be very good). Stay away from the cabbages, cauliflower, brussel sprouts until a little older, babies tend not to like the bitter vegetables, but you can also add 1 teaspoon of sugar when cooking any of those vegetables and the bitterness gets very reduced.
(one teaspoon to a package or can of vegetables is enough).
Do not force feed your child. They will tell you when they are hungry and usually stop when they have had enough (we dont do that as adults, we go back for seconds, thirds, etc)
Stay away from sodas, they have high fructose corn syrup and that is metabolized to fat, not to energy/glucose.
hope this helps.

I started on rice cereal, then the other cereals. Then I did vegetables, meats, and then fruits. Really once you start them on baby food, it doesn't really matter what order you do it in - only, I did veggies first because if they get used to the taste of fruits they may expect everything to be sweet and become more picky than they need to be. Plus I'm trying to get my kids to develop a taste for veggies.

The most important thing is to introduce one new thing at a time, over 3-4 days, to check for allergies.

Remember that for the first few weeks, you'll get about as much spitting back out of their mouths as goes in it, and that's okay. They just need to get used to the idea. Experience is the point of the first feedings more than nourishment.
