We have a Honda self propelled mower that mulches very well. It has a double blade setup, so the grass is actually cut twice as the blade passes through it. Additionally, the mower will bag cut grass.
When mulching grass, the grass can't be too wet or too tall. You also have to be sure that the blades are good and sharp. This makes the cuts finer and the grass looks better if the cuts are clean on the grass blades. If the grass is very tall or wet, bagging is good because the blades can become overwhelmed buy these factors, and then your cutting job looks bad.
It's important to keep the underside of the mower deck cleaned up, too. Build up affects how the blade works and in turn how well your mulching feature works.
Mulching grass is smart. You are returning organic matter to the soil, conserving water and saving landfill space from grass clippings. Further, you're saving yourself work.. bagging grass and then carrying those heavy bags is a pain!

You don't say whether you are considering a push mower (possibly self-propelled), or a lawn tractor - big differences between them. Since I work for Sears in Lawn/Garden, I'm very familiar with the Craftsman series of mowers. Most all of the Craftsman push mowers offer a 3-in-1 cutting system. You can bag, mulch, or side discharge. To mulch, you simply insert a plug in the side discharge, and remove the rear bag. All Sears Lawn tractor's have mulching capability, however, a separate mulch kit must be purchased which includes 2 or 3 mulching blades and a side discharge plug.
The effectiveness of mulching is dependent upon several factors (as has been pointed out by several others who answered your question). Never attempt to mulch high or wet grass - it's totally non-effective and will only clog up the underside of the mower. Sears sells both mulching/bagging blades and side-discharge blades - make sure you have the correct blades installed (yes - there is a difference between them). Make sure that your blades are reasonably sharp, it's a good idea to have 2 sets, while 1 set is being sharpend, use the other set. Finally, as was pointed out, maintain a minimum height of 2" for your grass, and cut it when needed, don't let it get too tall.

Most of the mulching mowers today do a pretty good job. Most are convertable from mulching to discharging. So I would look for one that has a bagging system and can be converted to mulching. That is in case the grass gets too long to mulch, you would want to bag it. Remember, you have to mow more often if your going to mulch and have it work right and look good. If the grass is too long none of the mowers will do a good job of mulching. They all require the same amount of maintenance and care. Pick the one that suits your needs, like lawn size, and your budget. More expensive isn't always better.

In general, you get what you pay for. Cut quality is one thing, ease of use, quietness, reliability and longevity come with the top of the line mowers, Honda, Simplicity, John Deere, Cub, Toro etc. A expensive mower may not cut better than a cheapy. Go to a implements dealer, lawn care equipment retailer and ask them. The size of your yard, obstacles and your own preferences matter most. Most decks cut well when equipped with a "mulching kit" mulching blades etc. I use Gator brand mulching blades on my tractor and they work great. Mulching success depends also on regular cutting. the old saying, "mow it high and let it lie". Cut your grass as high as practical for the type of grass, 3 inches or higher. Mow when you will be removing less than one inch, about one third of the total length or less. Smaller clippings, mulch and dissappear more readily. Your yard will be healthier and you will do less work to have a great looking yard. No need to rake leaves for most yards, just mow frequently in the fall and get them chopped up fine. Mow your grass shorter in preperation for winter.

Get a rotary mower wnd be sure which you do have a mulching blade. The blade desires to be sharp. this is going to mince the grass up so which you will no longer notice it. this is going to easily fioter down decrease than the stay blades. It helps to bypass over the backyard two times in distinctive guidelines. and determine you overlap the passes by one million/2 to one million/3 of the reducing section.

As the owner of a lawn maintenance co., I use a commercial grade lawn mower. I say that to say this, whatever lawn mower you purchase, make sure that you sharpen the blade regularly. You want the blade to cut the grass, and not to tear it, as that will make the grass more susceptible to fungus problems.

I have a Sears. But, when I had my landscaping business I had Kubota, Murray, Sears and an old Montgomery Wards. I kept the blades sharp and replaced when they got bent and kept the oil changed regular. Some had oil filters and some did not. All had good popular engines; Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, and I not remember the Kubota engine, but, it was all ball bearings. Real nice. But, the end story, they all worked and cut good and made me money.
But, for my money I bought a Sears for now. It, cut, mulch or bag. I do like the twin cylinders better as they seem to run smoother.

I haven't found significant differences between the brands of mulching lawnmowers, so my personal idea of a best brand of mulching lawnmower is whichever one is cheapest!!
