Everyone should pay an equal percentage.

In reality, nothing's fair.

Some are born 7 ft basketball players, some are born midgets. Some born with exceptional mental capabilities, some retarded. By making things "fair" economically all you're going to do is destroy the way of life for everyone both wealthy and poor. Look at the poverty and suffering in North Korea for example. Capitalism is the only reason you're even asking this question on a computer with internet access.

Actually 0.1% of the population gets >33% of the income, but they pay much less than 5% of the federal or state income taxes. They also own > 50% of the nations wealth.

And the situation is becoming more unbalanced all the time, not because of the native superiority of the wealthy but because of the disenfranchisement of the majority.

Of course they should pay more.
The top 1% (300,000) wage earners in this country also earned more -collectively - than the bottom 150,000,000 (50%) of America's wage earners.
Why should anyone think they should earn 800 times what they pay their average employee just because they're the CEO of some big multi-national corporation?
Why should anyone think they are entitled to earn twenty million dollars a picture just because they're a 'movie star"?
Why should corporations like Halliburton be allowed to make BILLIONS from this insane, immoral 'war', then move its corporate headquarters to the Cayman Islands to avoid paying U.S. taxes??
Why should anyone begrudge paying as much as 90% of his or her multi-million-dollar income in taxes when (s)he lives in a country that allows such freedom or opportunity?
Why should half of all Americans be burdened with any taxes at all when it's practically impossible to make ends meet on their dismal salaries?
Why should billionaire families like the Waltons not be expected to - and privileged to - pay billions in taxes to help sustain the rest of society instead of having an "All for One....ME" mentality toward their grotesque wealth?
