Well, given the obviously-Irish given name, Sean, it's possible Rory was used in it's true form in that case. It stems from the root ruadh, or "red," and has often been used as a nickname for someone with red hair or who's red-complexioned. Do either of these apply?

As far as the television show is concerend, I'd assume Rory simply stems from a rhyming variant of Lori -- a fairly-obvious shortening of Lorelei (or their misspelling, Lorelai, I believe). After all, rhyming pet forms are not at all unusual -- think of Dick for Richard or Ted for Edward -- and in this case, the R sound is already part of the name itself. Substitute it for the beginning L, and you easily get Rory. ;)

Rory started out as a boy's name - Gaelic in origin. It's been used more and more for girls in recent years, like Avery and a few other "y" ending names.

The name means red - does your friend have red hair?
