I mean specifically some of the intense criticism he got from Rene Lebowitz and other Schoenbergesque people.

You could plug in the name of any composer into that question. There is simply no way to account for what somebody will like or dislike.

Tchaikovsky was not universally beloved during his time, nor was Brahms, Wagner -- and a host of others.

Stands to reason that today there will be differences of opinion as well.

It has nothing to do with Sibelius' merit as a composer.

Love that 2nd symphony!

Do you mean the composer, or the high-end music notation program? Because there are factions that divide between Sibelius and Finale - and always a few small camps that are into other more obscure notation programs. Both of these programs attract students, serious amateurs, and are the tools of the trade of composers today. I earned a BM and MM in Music Theory before any of this cool stuff was invented, and a wrote and re-copied until my HANDS just about fell off!

They don't understand him/his music. Appreciation often comes from understanding. There are quite a few people out there who have an obssession with single composers or styles, and are not too interested in listening "outside of the box". I personally like Sibelius very much.

The fact that he was criticized for being "old fashioned" always kind of tickles me. Sibelius 4th symphony was the most advanced and avaunt guard music ever composed when it was new.

Becuase they simply do not understand his music. I was at that point once, but I decided to check him out because he had a very unique name.

I remember the first time I listened to one of his works, which was the finale to his Second Symphony. It was very lyrical, but what drew me in was its hypnotic and schizophrenic ending. It LITERALLY drew me to Sibelius's music as that ending completely sucked me in. I then listened to his First Symphony, and that was equally lyrical. Lastly, his work Kullervo was also great, especially the ending.

Anyways, I compare Sibelius to Tchaikovsky, who were both masters of the Romantic period and had an uncanny ability to come up with harmonious melodies and their great ability to depict the feeling of coldness. Great masters of their time.

Because it doesn't do that something to my soul like Bach's music does. People say, oh it's because you don't understand his music, that's ridiculous, I have to understand music to enjoy it........that doesn't make sense to me, do you have to understand a good steak to enjoy it....no you just know that you do.....so get over it with that understanding him !!!!!
