when the murder of the white couple in Knoxville was not prosecuted as a federal hate crime there were protests.

Do you think people will protest this?

Well, if it is charged as a hate crime they will get less time in prison. Where if they charged them with kidnapping, sexual assault, etc. they will get a longer time in prison. I personally do not care what they call it, as long as they keep these people off the street. If these nasty *** people don't get much time in jail I'll be protesting.

Yes, hate crimes do not carry a high sentence.

malvernhills07- I completely agree! "Hate crime" charges are absurd. There should be no laws against thoughts or feelings. Verbal assault is one thing (as ridiculous as it may be). But to consider an act to be a hate crime? Logic and common sense dictates that any crime which is motivated by hatred is a "hate crime". But motivation should only be considered for the purpose of arrest and for indictment, prosecution, and deliberation in a court of law. The reason being because it's only important for those purposes. We have no business making laws for motivation. It's amazing that people cry over civil liberties while supporting the prosecution of "hate crimes". Classifying crimes as "hate crimes" violate our civil liberties since it's a policing of our minds and mouths. Punish the action, NOT THE THOUGHT!

Now for the question.....

"Will white people protest this time?" I don't know. And the only white people who WOULD know if any white people will protest would be white people who know other white people who say that they'll protest. After all, just like black people, our brains aren't conjoined. As for myself, due to what I believe, I won't protest any case not being tried as a hate crime (regardless of race).

Why are you making such a big deal out of it, if you want things in this world to be normal stop talking like this, I am white and could care less what color they are I live my life and that is all that matters. When a certain race start talking about they were white and killed a black person it was a hate crime maybe they did not like them for who they were.. I just find it funny how people take this whole race thing to another level when it is not necessary. Just grow up and enjoy life.

In this particular case, though it's clear that this poor woman was the victim of a hate crime, I think prosecutors should charge these animals with whatever crimes will get them the most time in prison. If a federal hate crime will only land them 10 years, then skip that charge and find something that carries a longer sentence!

the whole tit for tat thing is increasing

i suspect that soon all crimes by black criminals (who mostly would kill anyone they had the opportunity to) will be prosecuted as "hate crimes"

as for protesting, if you count talk radio complaints, then yes there will be protests

personally, I feel that crimes should be prosecuted as hate crimes, only if the intent is to hurt or kill because of a person's race, gender, sexual orientation, etc

so if an addict, who happens to be white kills me because i have $50 he feels he cannot live without, it is NOT a hate crime

now if a guy from my old neighborhood decides I am tired and sick of "those people" and goes into the an area of town where there are white, gay people (like Oak Lawn) and kills a man, then it IS a hate crime

yes I think people will protest, but hate crime should be based on intent

I see that since you were wrong on Michael Vick you had to find you a new cause to champion? They will probably protest, most people that protest only want attention and national exposure so they can dupe people into giving them money. When my uncle was killed by a black man, I did not protest it as a hate crime, but you know what, I dont want national face time or your money, so I guess that makes sense.

I dislike the very idea of charging someone with a "hate crime" because I think it punishes thought and speech.
For example : I attack a guy with a baseball bat. Beat him bad. I should be charged with felonious assault, assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm, etc.
Now...what if my victim is Mexican and in between swipes of my bat I yell at him :
"You damn *******! I hate Mexicans!" etc.
Now it has become a "hate crime" and I can get additional time in prison. Kind of like the felony firearms deal - they add two years above and beyond an original sentence if a gun was used. An extra two years gets tacked on.
So in my case, because I said racist things while I was committing my crime I can get EXTRA time.
I am getting more time because of what I said - I am being punished for my speech.

Charge people for the actual crime they commit. If they are indeed guilty and deserve a harsh sentence then by all means lock 'em up and throw away the key. But don't give them extra punishment for what they say and think.

If there is not outrage for these crimes, then it's time to saturate the media.I'm in Italy and this sad case was on the news here, but I have yet to hear it on Fox News. How can any thinking person consider these vile crimes anything but horrific. These offenders need to be locked up now and for a very long time.

This is sick. As the article says, they will get less time by labeling it a hate crime, although it obviously was. Labeling it means nothing, as long as they are locked up and out of society for as long as possible.

It should be considered a hate crime. Sadly, white people will not protest. But I think that is the way that most people are. White people do not protest anything unless it is for the benefit of a white person. Black people do not protest anything unless it is for the benefit of a black person. We are all selfish and we tend to empathize only with our own kind. That is why the world is such a hateful place and injustice is widespread.
