She's trying to take them to a quiet spot. Dogs do the same thing. Take the momma and the babies and put them in the back of a closet and don't disturb them unless you have to. After a few weeks, she will let them out on their own and won't be so protective of them.

My cat had kittens about 4 months ago, and she was also a first time mother. She was doing the same thing. What I did was let her move one kitten to where she wanted it, and moved the rest of them with the box near where she felt she wanted them. She may just want a diff. location. But like someone else said, watch them like a hawk.

wow... never heard about a cat carrying the babies that way. Just around the neck. Where is the box located? does the mother feel safe where the box is place?

My cat did this with her litter as well, she just doesn't feel like they are safe with everyone knowing where they are, so she's trying to hide them, she'll find a hiding place, and if you don't mind her hiding them for a few weeks, i'd leave her too it.. she'll take care of them.. if you have dogs or small children just keep them away otherwise she'll continue to move them around..

Yes it is normal. the mother wants to take them to a spot she likes that she wants her kittens to be at. Thats why you can sometimes find a cat in weird spots like under a bed, they're "nesting".
