SAE is the acronym for the society of automotive engineers.
They set the standard for all sorts of things, such as the size of wrenches, ie: 1/8" 1/4" 1/2" etc. In the case of engine oil, say 10 w 40, It has to due with the weight, viscosity and other factors such as temperature. The engine manufacture tells
you what SAE grade of oil to use in your vehicle.
