Well, that would be true if Santa were Hispanic. The Santa Claus we know today originated as a mispronunciation of Dutch Sinterklaas, which in turn is a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas).

Supposedly it's from the original 'santa' Saint Nicholas. The story goes that children were so excited to see him, they shouted his name so quickly, it came out sounding more like Santa Claus. Try it, it's pretty true. So I guess we just use a slang version of the name St. Nicholas.
