In CA, you must be a lawyer admitted to the CBAR first. You can then seek an appointment by the governor, or get elected.

You can also be a Court Commissioner. These are lawyers appointed by the Superior Court panel of judges to hear mostly traffic and small claims cases as well as criminal preliminary hearings.

You have to be a lawyer first. Cbar is probably Calif. state bar association. Judge school comes later in the form of training.

Generally (and this may differ from state to state) an opening for a judge is announced and applicants respond. In Wyoming the requirements (for a supreme court justice) are that the applicant must have been in practice for 9 years, be at least 30 years old, a citizen of the US, and have been a Wyoming resident for at least 3 years. For lesser judges the requirements are less.

A judicial nomination committee selects from the applicants (In Wyoming 3 are selected for supreme court justices).

Then the governor selects one of the remaining 3.

So in Wyoming (for a supreme court justice) you must have worked as a lawyer in some fashion for at least 9 years.

And there is no "judge school".

Remember that states differ as to this process, so your state may be quite different.

First, you have to get your bachelor's degree from an accredited college.

Next, you go to law school and pass.

Next, you have to take the state bar exam and get admitted to the practice of law.

Next, in most cases, people go to work as lawyers. Now, some judges get elected (this happens alot with local judges)while others are appointed (all federal judges are appointed as are most state circuit judges). In either case, if you work for the state attorney's office or public defenders office, those folks tend to get on fast track to a judgship given their trial experience and the fact that they get their names known. quickly.
