So, you're watching a movie when you spot Joan Cusack... you have to know that John isn't all that far behind. What's up with that? Are they contractually obligated to appear in each other's films? Anybody got a clue?

There are not in all the same movies together. Joan Cusack was not in Must Love Dogs, John Cusack was not in Toys, Addams Family Values or Raising Hele. If you look at imdb they have only been in 8 films together.
Sister Joan Cusack appeared in 8 of his movies:Class (1983), Sixteen Candles (1984), Grandview, U.S.A. (1984), Broadcast News (1987), Say Anything... (1989), Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), Cradle Will Rock (1999) and High Fidelity (2000). And they will be co-starring in War Inc and Martian Children.
And John has 55 credits to his name and Joan 47 so that is only about 20% of either of their careers. So in essence they haven't done that much together. May some director like to have them together because they are siblings and work well together. In the earlier years it was probably the fact that they went to auditions together and now they may tell each other about projects.

Also, Say Anything, One Crazy Summer, Better Off Dead, High Fidelity and Runaway Jury which all star just John Cusack...speaking of John, why do all his characters always end up on pay phones in the pouring rain crying about some girl he loves that dumped him again?!!????

Joan does NOT make an appearance in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (which is a damn good movie, if I must say so myself...and I do.)

If you need a break from that phenomenon, see "The Grifters" with JUST John, and then "The Addams Family Values" with JUST Joan, and then "Arlington Road" with Joan...

Someone needs to mention that Joan does not appear in "Being John Malkovich", which I feel is his best role ever.
