I believe when used in EXTREME cases it can be effective.
I've done it twice, my son is almost 10...he's not repeated those 2 mistakes.
I was hit with a belt twice, never forgot it, love my dad to death, turned out just fine...

Spanking is good. It worked for all the generations before us.

Hard to say I since I don't have any children. I don't think I personally have it in me to hit anyone with a belt or any other object no matter what they did. I got hit with a belt once as a child and it left huge welts and marks.
I think I would use the lecture, and grounding methods. But no matter what, everything should be done in moderation and when you are calm. Punishing someone in anger is never a good idea.

Bad but it can work in extreme cases and I swore I would never-ever hit my son with a belt because my dad did and I thought it was the most awful feeling.

Sure it's effective, but it just doesn't make sense to me - exactly what lesson are you teaching them ?
I can honestly say that in my case, being hit (don't you just love that "spanked" word, makes it seem so soft and friendly) as a child has prevented me from reaching my full potential. That's just me, perhaps I was a sensitive child. I wouldn't have thought so, if you had asked me. How can you tell how your child is affected, deep on the inside ? No one, not even the child, will know how it affected them, until they are grown.
Are you still prepared to take that risk ?

Spanking kids...no
Spanking the monkey...yes
Naughty spankings for bedroom fun...Oh yah!
I got whipped once when I was 8 for starting & driving heavy equipment (an earth mover). The cops showing up ruined a great day. Only needed on whoopin' to set me straight.

It's good, I think those of us who were spanked (not hit or abused, but spanked as a fair punishment) will all agree that it was a terrifying punishment, but we learned from it and aren't scared or anything because of it. Those people who are fighting it are the ones who were never spanked or who were abused.

I respectfully disagree. I had no occasion to spank our kids. We found positive reinforcement the most effective means of getting the desired behavior, closely followed by withdrawal of privileges.
I believe hitting a child teaches the child that the strongest person gets to control the behavior of the weaker. In some kids, this has dire consequences when they're adults, especially if they are large and strong--or feel especially weak and vulnerable.

They can be a good thing as long as the child knows why he is being spanked, and you don't go to extremes with it.

depends on the childs age and the situation but it should never be done in anger and should only be used as a last resort if nothing else works! and then it should only be ONE swift swat on the butt!
