I was with my wife and kid in target shopping for a halloween costume for my 6 month old son. I found the perfect one. It was black and has bats and the word BOO all over it.
When we got to the checkout counter, I asked my wife if she got the "BOO" costume or not?
I heard this snort come from the person behind the register and they guy goes running off and appeared very offended.
In fact the manager came over and finished the tally and said for some reason I really p!ssed the guy off!
What did I do wrong?
Help!

The manager said it was because he is black. What the hell does that have to do with it?

Joeinchino.....Thanks for the clarification. After viewing your word on wiki I now know what the offense was. Wiki states this.....
*******, jiggabo, jijjiboo, zigabo, jig, jigg, jiggy, jigga, jigger
(U.S. & UK) a black person (JB) with stereotypical Black features (dark skin, wide nose, big lips, etc.).[83]
Now I get it.

I worked with a black girl that would call all of her black guy friends "Boo". I think this is something that they call each other. So, when you said "did you get the boo costume", he thought you were dressing your baby as a black person. Don't worry about it. I here them call each other the "N" word too. It's ok for them to do it but don't dare a white person say it because then of course the white person is a racist.

I dont find it offensive but...
Seems he took what u were saying about a costume and then misinterpreted it as having somehow referred to him.
See if u said "Didja get a boo costume" real fast it would sound like "Jagetaboo costume"?
Which sorta sounds like a racial slur 'Jig- a- boo', which isn't widely known.

I really don't know why that would be offensive, but there still could be many possibilites. He could have a slight mental issue, and maybe he had a girlfriend that he called her his "boo" and they had a very serious relationship and ended up getting his heart terribly broken. Or maybe, somehow, he had a bad childhood that involved the word "boo" in it. I don't know exactly, but there could be endless possibilities.

Perhaps you should have asked the manager exactly what offended the guy at the register and suggested to the manager that they really should vet their employees better. To select those who are more objective and open-minded, those who will not bolt at the first hearing of something without even knowing exactly what's going on.

I would say he probably took it as a racial slur but obviously he way over reacted especially since your conversation was not directed toward him.
If it truly offended him he should have said something to you (i.e., Excuse me sir but I find that term offensive) instead of running off to tell his manager. You did nothing wrong - he acted totally immature.

It is hard to believe that someone dealing with the public is so sensitive that they run away from their job.
Second thing that is hard to believe is that the manager stepped in and "accused" you of offending his clerk. If the clerk can't do his job, the manager should step in as he did but he NEVER should have said anything like that to you. He should have said that the clerk wasn't well and left it at that.
You shouldn't worry about it.

The only thing I can come up with is if he thought Boo was a reference to Jiggaboo... Its like a deep south slang for black folks which they are not very fond of. Assuming you were referring to the costume and not to the gentleman, maybe he didnt hear you right or something...

Maybe he was offended because it was black in color and had the word boo on it which is supossed to be a scary word. He probably took it as meaning people of the black race are perceived as scary to others.

It sounds like you didn't do anything wrong. Maybe the guy misunderstood you, but I really don't see what he thought you could have said. Who knows. I really wouldn't give it much thought. I can see from that answers that you have already gotten that most feel the same way as me. The guy was clearly off.
No worries on your part :)
