I've never thought about that.
I guess they couldn't do a comedy like that these days since the NHS hospitals like you out of their beds as soon as possible and long before you're fully recovered these days.

They'd be called bed blockers these days too. lol

Well the series lasted 3 years but there were only 20 odd eps so we can presume they were in hospital for say maybe 6 weeks.
They all had undergone some operation or other but were hypochondriacts with problems on the outside, and in the late 70's it was a much different NHS.
So it's not too far fetched.but at the end of the day it's a harmless, slightly silly comedy which quite a lot of people found funny, kids were very found of it.

Great theme tune too.

You tell me. I've often wondered about this. The entire cast [except one] are regularly on TV. Maybe we should write to one or all of them and ask, "exactly what life threatening illness were you all suffereing from to have to say in hospital for three [3] years.?"

I bet when the first script was sent in the producers probably said, "no way is this going to work." "I mean, who's going to watch three patients in hospital for three years?"

Which just goes to show.

You can still see 'Only When I Laugh' it's run on one of the Freeview channels - sorry cannot remember which one. Have sometimes gone into it while flicking through the channels.

And, one questions, why isn't Gupta reading the news on ITV now that Sir Mac has gone to 'News Knight'.?

I know!, the length of time you are kept in hospital nowadays, if they ever did a remake, it would only be a 30 minute one off show!

"It's the only time you'll ever laugh in hospital"

I don't really know but I suppose you never know with hospitals. You go in with one thing and you end up staying in for everything else that you have caught, while being there. Maybe MRSA
