Yes, I just started one a couple of weeks ago. Sportsmans Guide had a nice bin for a great price ($60).
Only putting in vegetative matter, tree trimmings, leaves, hedge cuttings, paper towels, cotton dryer lint, veggie and fruit waste, a little newspaper/cardboard.
I've had some fruit flies hanging around, but mostly only when I put a bunch of fruit on top.
Hope to see some nice compost next spring/summer.

Yes we have two from the council and another one my husband made from boards.
The two plastic ones are almost full and the pink worm population is amazing! The other night I went to have a look and steam was rising so it's definitely composting. The stuff at the bottom is now lovely and dark and crumbly.
We put in kitchen waste, garden weeds, a bit of newspaper but we tear it up (or use paper my pet rats have chewed up and sprinkled with droppings) and some grass cuttings (but be careful cos they can just go slimy if too many - mix them up with other stuff). My husband also pees in the compost bins when he's out in the garden which is excellent for compost!
Good luck with yours!

I have a compost bin and put all my grass cuttings , potato peelings weeds and other veg from peeling and trimming etc.You will get an advice leaflet with your bin telling you what to put in it and you can buy an accelerator to speed up the composting process ,so you wont be waiting around for ages !I have just created a new flower bed with last years compost and its the best stuff in the garden(I didn't use an accelerator as I prefer it to be natural!)

My hubby is actually building one right this minute. We just bought a house with lots of trees and the leaves are going to be the main event in the bin. I'm so excited I will have compost to work into the nasty clay soil we have.

I have a compost pile. I alternate the soil and veges/plant debris with a layer of manure. Then in the spring, my huband uses the tractor to flip it. After it is flipped, my chickens go nutty with all the earthworms in there. It is a true chicken party! I also compost my vege garden over the winter. I put a layer of leaves, then manure (old) and then over the winter I just add vege scraps, egg shells, and organic materials really, as well as using the chicken manure on top of that. Then in the spring, my husband rototills it for me and I have great soil! I also have a great husband..tee hee. You will find that the soil is dark and rish, and is great for your roses!!!

We have 2 bins. No problems with rats even though we live near farmland, you just need to make sure that pet waste, cooked foods etc are not put in. This is what attracts them.
We use it for all of our non-cooked veg' waste, garden waste and shredded paper.
Happy composting!

i have 2 compost bins and as long as you don't put in cooked food you won't have a problem . i put grass clippings, vegetable peelings, garden waste (but not weeds or soil), shredded paper and cardboard, egg shells and horse manure thanks to a local riding school in them. i got good results from them and you get satisfaction from doing your bit for recycling as well. i have been composting for 3 years and i have never had a problem with rats in the bins.

Ye I do. No problem with rats etc. I keep fat products out of it. No meat, bread, cheese, or fats in the compost, and you will be fine. Those things are what attract vermin.
