It is not certain because many observers watching ships appear over the horizon would come to that conclusion.
Aristotle believed the earth was round, and an astronomer in India said the earth was a sphere in the 8th century BC. By 250 BC the circumference of the earth was measured in Egypt.

I have come to that conclusion. At least close to spherical.
The idea of it being flat or cubical is just crazy.
If you mean who came to it first, probably ancient mariners who could see the curve of the earth in all directions.

It was Galileo. Everyone thought the earth was flat and he told them it was round. It has gone way back to the 1500's.
