Hmmm, darned Vista...its also pissing me of too in many ways. Try "searching" for any item like a "Dr. Watson...DirectX diagnostic tools", "System Information", "System Tools" and Device Manager. I know thats in WinXP, but I don't know if Vista inherited it. It should help you test and eventually (with user intuition) pinpoint the culprit.

Also check to see that the drivers for sound are installed properly, that the sound devices (@ the motherboard level) haven't been disabled, that you have a sound card...connected to the board, etc.

check 2 C if U put the speaker jack in the correct jack on the CPU. there r 3 mic, input, output, conect 2 the out put. Vista has so may problems that they should have never released it. U did not say if the CPU is new or not ,it may have a problem with the sound card if it's used. If new bring it back & have them fix it.

Right Click on my computer and select properties. Click on the Device Manager Tab. If you have a yellow exclamation point over your audio drivers then you need to update them. If not, check your speaker connections.

you may need to install the sound drivers of your new pc. look for the motherboard's cd and browse through it to find the driver or you may also opt to reinstall the whole cd.
