G.W. Bush told the press among others that he sees the need for at least a ten year commitment of high level presence by our U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. He can't be serious, or is he delusional?

The U.S. is broke and mortgaged to the teeth to China, that notwithstanding, just as every generation has done in the past ( when confronted by a senseless war) the fighting age men and women will finally turn a deaf ear to the call for service. There is no way in hell that Congress will pass an active draft for the Iraq/Afghanistan conflict. So, where does this administration think they'll find young warriors to do their bidding on the battlefield. Well, that is a mute point because they don't care after January 2008.

Mr. Regerugged, I've noticed over time that people in this forum(YA) immediately label an opposing view as a "rant". Well, sorry sir but I won't be silenced by labels. As for your references to past wars, consider the rebellion against the North towards the draft during the Civil War and of course more recently the conflict in Southeast Asia. As for economics, the Chinese and others have us by the "small hairs" I submit just mere weeks ago when they had a slight upheaval in their market, it didn't take long to stir up the doo-doo on Wall Street. Thanks for your contribution though, we do need vigorous dialog in this nation!

I agree with Robin Hood,

I think the fact that FOUR TIMES Bush has insisted that Saddam didn't let the inspectors in so that is why we attacked Iraq is evidence enough that he is mentally incompetent.

Also Bush insisted that the President of Iran said things that he didn't! Bush said this about the President of Iran: "You've threatened countries with nuclear weapons. You've said you want a nuclear weapon."

THAT IS INSANE! the man must be removed form office immediately!

I really wish there was a way to unlink Iraq and Afghanistan. You point is well taken and I just wish we could un hock this topic. I am tired of seeing funding issued for both at the same time. We need to see how the fund are being spent. We went to war in Afghanistan and for some reason all the funds are going to Iraq? I just dont understand how the people of this country can just stand around with out voicing concern about the topic. You sit and watch as this so call man G Bush blows this country to hell from the inside out.

If they did draft, I would go if called because the men before went.

From my understand about finding the warriors is that they are using high end funds to get people to enlist. As of now I know its 20,000 to sign up. That is a big chunck of change to start off. Thou they only give you 10k up front and the other 10k over the time you serve. Lot of people are signing up because its more than they make in a year half or two years.

Your question is really a rant. Nothing you claim is correct. The US has had military in Europe and Japan since WWII. That has not stopped recruitment. The war has been over for 62 years!
The US has had military presence in South Korea for 54 years after the end of active conflict. That has not stopped recruitment.
Having a presence in Iraq and in Afghanistan does not necessarily mean there will be major wars raging for ten years.
You may know how to fight, but you sure don't know economics. The US is the richest country in the world. We have benefit of Chinese goods and services. The Chinese have a safe full of paper. Who is better off?
Thank you for your service to the USA. But you would be better off sticking to things you know.

Very true, it all comes due after he leaves office. With allowances for some troops to come home in August so that the elections can have a positive outcome for Republicans.
"See, our troops are coming home, vote for me."
Its so cynical that even I am amused by it, I didn't think Bush could think of something so Byzantine.
Its the next president that will have to raise taxes to pay for his war, will still be faced with the problems of social security and health that Bush glossed over with a stab at an unworkable idea then dropped. The next president will carry the burden that Bush leaves behind.
Its enough to make you vote Republican, at least they should clean up their own mess.
Almost.

Well spoken. I don't think I could have said it better. Bravo for veterans who are speaking out against this senseless conflict marked by haphazard planning and arrogant misconceptions about the region by the neo-conservatives in the Bush administration. They are like many of the ruling class - they get a half-baked idea and then they expect hard-working people to carry out their crazy plans. Just as you said, they won't care after January, 2008 because I don't think this election is one which they will care to steal like the last two.
