Do not go by the brand name (alone,) as the fit is more important. It needs to be the right size for you, or be able to be set to a wide range of sizes.
The general shape, the diversions and the pockets (if any,) are also important.

And some brands do make less up to standard bags too. And there are cheaper bags that are the same as the brand bags without the price that comes with the name.

So go to a good store, look around and ask a seller to help you to get the right bag.
If you have the right bag it will serve you for years to come, but if you buy the wrong one, it can be so expensive, but you will not use it much at all.

Osprey seems to be pretty good. Can't go wrong with a Gregory or a Dana Designs either. I think Gregory has some choices when it comes to women's packs too. Would be worth checking out.
