870.....
The Danes invade England (870) and conquer East Anglia. Several battles are fought with Wessex, but then peace is made (871). The Danes go on to establish the Danelaw in other parts of England. In 876, the Danes attack Wessex again, and in 878 king Alfred the Great of Wessex has to retreat to a single fort in the marshes of Somerset, but later that year he defeats the Danes, and England is divided in a Danish part in the northeast and a Wessex part in the south and west.
In the southwest of England, the Cornish continue to be driven back, with their King Dungarth (or Doniert or Dumgarth) drowning in battle around the middle of the decade.
872 — Battle of Hafrsfjord. Harald Fairhair unites Norway.
886 — Alfred the Great of Wessex captures London

866 Yikes the Vikings and they are raping & pillaging & buggering boys & farm animals along with burning & destroying buildings - - - lots of monks were not only robbed of sacred relics & scant wealth they were also the first to hear` those chilling words, "Ya got a pretty Mouth, Now get down on your knees and pray real Good.'

Well, the most crucial development in England was the unification of the Anglo-Saxon tribes into one nation.

From about AD 800 on, waves of Danish (Viking) assaults on the coastlines of the British Isles were gradually followed by a succession of Danish settlers. Danish raiders first began to settle in England starting in 865, when brothers Halfdan Ragnarsson and Ivar the Boneless wintered in East Anglia. They soon moved north and in 867 captured Northumbria and its capital, York, defeating both the recently deposed King Osberht of Northumbria, as well as the usurper Ælle. The Danes then placed an Englishman, Ecgberht, on the throne of Northumbria as a puppet. The established Danish Kingdom, which controlled over three quarters of the island of Great Britain, became known as the Danelaw.

When Alfred the Great, King Wessex, (848-899) came to the throne in Southern England, control of the island began to shift back to the Anglo-Saxons. He united the the Anglo-Saxon tribes and successfully drove the Danes (Vikings) out of England. Alfred became the first king with the title "King of the Anglo-Saxons".

The Kingdom of England receives its name from the Anglo-Saxons. The Danes gave the island under the rule of Alfred the name, "Angle-Land", which eventually evolved into "England".

Peace

878 CE - Alfred defeats the Danes at Eddington. Alfred had a fleet of longships designed and built, therefore he was named the 'Father of the Royal Navy.'

890 CE - The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (England's history up to Alfred's reign) compiled upon Alfred's orders in Old English (Anglo-Saxon).

910 CE - The English and the Danes fought at Tettenhall (near Wolverhampton), and the English were victorious. And in the same year, Aethelflaed (Alfred's firstborn daughter) had a stronghold built at Bremsbyrig (Bromsberrow, near Hereford).
