I have been watching a DVD of Dick Cavett interviews from early 70s - John Huston, Truman Capote, Kathering Hepburn etc - todays stars and personalities seem mass produced in comparison to them.

Today we are protected from anyone old or slightly funny looking. This leaves us with britney spears, et al. boring.

Those Cavett interviews are amazing. Be sure to find the ones he did with Groucho Marx and Alfred Hitchcock - amazing interviews.

I think there are still amazing people out there. Remember, even back in the 70s, over 90% of the people were insipid. You just happened across a few of the amazing ones.

The biggest problem today is finding good interviewers. Too often, people today sound insipid because of the questions being asked. So often I feel like screaming at the interviewer "Why would you ask such a stupid question?"

Oh, those people, not everyone. That's easy. Stars today do not need intelligence, just mass appeal. The acting, um, "skills," required nowadays are nowhere near what they used to be, and most stars are just after money. The ones that don't care about money are not interested in being interviewed by equally insipid interviewers. The interviewers have to be careful not to stress the stars too much by asking questions they won't know the answers to ("What do you think about President Bush's answer to the mortgage foreclosure crisis?", or "Is it really a good idea to adopt infants from foreign countries when we have so many kids waiting for adoption in this country?")

The good news, though, is that a lot of these stars today are doing more good with their money than those old stars.

And of course, the people who make these stars rich, like you and me, are on the whole a lot less demanding than people used to be. The TV and internet generations are not overly knowledgeable or caring about really important issues. Present company excluded, of course.

Because scandals sell. And bad behavior is attention getting. And having something intelligent to say isn't scandalous enough for the gossip mongers.

My favorite interviewer is:

and second to her is:

Their interviews are always interesting

Because todays tv is for the couch potato, and not the thinking man?

Those were three of his more interesting guests. If you took three of Jay Leno's more interesting guests, they would appear to have just as much substance.
