A few weeks ago I met this guy at a friends b-day party. When I told him that one of the girls there looked like Miss Piggy on crack, he asked "Who is Miss Piggy?"

I said "You know, Miss Piggy-Kermits babe."
"Who's Kermit?" he asks.
I say "From the Muppets!"
He says "The who?"
I say, "The Muppets-Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie-Haven't you ever heard of them?"
And he says "No".

This guy is like 50 years old, and has seriously never heard of the Muppets!!!!! I couldn't believe it!

So I'm wondering.....Is there anybody, besides "Mr. Very Sheltered Life" who doesn't know who the Muppets are?

I think maybe one of his kids lives in my area.

My truck is in the shop, so I have been driving my husband's, which means no CD player. The radio station I listen to has this thing they do everyday at the same time called the daily mashup, which is two songs mashed up and blended together. The other day they had one which was a mashup of the Muppets song (Ma na ma na...) and a song by Jett. A guy called the station and they put him on the air because he had absolutely no idea who the Muppets are. The DJ thought he was kidding, and tried to joke with him about it, and then, as the guy talked, it became completely clear he has never, ever heard of the Muppets in his life.

They asked him all sorts of questions, seeing as he's kind of a novelty. He's in his 30s, was born and raised here in the US, and he has no clue who any of the Muppets are, except that he did remember reading something about some religious group having a fit because two puppets on TV were male and were living together. He said he didn't really care about puppets, especially gay ones, so he didn't follow up on it.

They asked him how he managed to grow up in the US in the 70s and not know about Sesame Street, and he said that his parents were really religious, and they didn't allow him or his siblings to watch TV because it's so sinful. He said he finally found out about a lot of cultural stuff when he rebelled as a teenager, but there was a lot of stuff he doesn't know about. To make matters worse, he was homeschooled, so he didn't know about ANYTHING, because he didn't have friends growing up who could tell him about stuff. As an example, he didn't know about Star Wars until Episode One came out. He said that's when he went to a video store and rented the three original ones. He said he was so impressed with them he researched Harrison Ford, and that's when he found out about an adventurer named Indiana Jones.

I have to tell you, I have heard a lot of really crazy stuff in my life, but listening to this guy on the radio really blew my mind. I finished driving home in a kind of daze, feeling kind of bad for him because he missed Sesame Street and Mister Rogers and The Electric Company and Zoom and a gazillion other things that normal kids in the US grow up with.

It was weird. If you see that guy again, ask him if he has any sons in Utah who were raised in a pretty restictive environment and homeschooled. I can't believe there are more than a handful of people who have lived here their whole lives who could have missed out on that.

A lot of people in the Arabian Peninsula would not know who the heck the Muppets are. Or perhaps if they did they would not recognize them by names.

That being said, I am a fan of the Grouch and Elmo.

I incredibly have not heard that. they'd't return to television, they have not employed me yet to do all of Richard Hunt's characters, a pair of Jim Henson's characters and 2 Jerry Nelson's characters. i will do the voices, i've got been puppeteering for years....why won't they hire me?

My kids are 15 and 10 and they've never heard of them. When we were kids, there was a weekly TV show so everyone knew about them.
