There are actually several kinds of modems. The most basic is a dial up modem, for a dial up modem you need to create a dial up connection on your computer using the create a new connection link in Network Connections in your control panel. There is also a dumb DSL modem where you need to create a PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over the Internet) connection in your computer using the username and password that you ISP has provided you. There are also modems that act as a router in these cases, you need to access the user interface of the modem and run the Setup Wizard and then input your username and password. For additional help you need to contact the Help Desk of your ISP so that a technical support rep can help you identify your modem and assist you in getting your Internet connection. Also, for a single ISP account you can only use one modem for each connection.

Let's start by gathering some info from you.

A) Are you using a dialup account, cable, dsl, satellite, or something else?

B) What type of computer are you using to connect?

C) Has it worked then suddenly stopped? It's never worked? It works on the third Tuesday of the month only?

D) Are you using anything else such as a wireless router? How is your computer connected to the Internet?

Hopefully 5 modem is a brand and not the number, because you only need ONE.
