Actually it was the Chinese Admiral Zheng who circled the globe during the period of 1405-1435 and is generally credited with complete circumnavigation in 1421.
Like the fact that the Norse got to North America 500 years before Columbus the fact that the Chinese got to the Americas AND circumnavigated the globe is also contentious but there is a lot of evidence for it.

It was a portuguese captain called Fernão de Magalhães (in spanish we call him Fernando de Magallanes), that started the first circunnavigation of the earth in 1519. The only problem is that he died before finishing it, so Juan Sebastian Elcano continued the trip. The trip started in Sevilla, Spain, 1519; with 5 boats. The captain was Magallanes. In 1521, Magallanes died fighting against the filipinos (of course, in the Philippines) and Elcano commanded the expedition until they came back to Spain in 1522. The king of Spain gave Elcano a metalic globe with the inscription "You have circunnavigated me"...

It was Panglima Awang (known as Enrique of Malacca, and Henry the Black), Magellan's interpreter. He was captured in Sumatra as a child and taken to the Moluccas where he was sold to Magellan in 1511; he accompanied Magellan on his circumnavigation and ended up on Cebu in the Philippines.
