Plants do not care where their nutrients come from. Most fertilizer nutrients, whether organic or inorganic sources must be processed by soil microbes before they can be assimilated by a plant's roots. But there are a few exceptions. The miracle in Miracle Gro is that they include Ammoniacal Nitrogen or Nitrate Nitrogen. Both of these forms of nitrogen can be directly absorbed without microbe activity. They also include Urea Nitrogen. All three of these are fast release nitrogen sources that readily leach or vaporize back into the atmosphere. They will give your plants a quick growth burst, but they do not last. This is probably what Sptfyr is referring to when she says "its like being on crack". You need to apply Mircale Gro often to provide a constant source of nitrogen.

So is there anything harmful to Mircale Gro? It is a decent inorganic fertilizer that can provide essential nutrients for plant growth. It has no slow release nitrogen sources, its nitrogen forms can burn & they readily leach into our soils or fresh water sources. It does not improve your soil, in fact it will acidify the soil. And lastly, it is a $2.2 B dollar company with 59% or better market share that feels threaten by a little $1.5 M start-up company like TerraCycle and thinks that law suits are the best way to compete in the market place. For my money, I'd rather use worm poop made by TerraCyle that helps to build better soils, feeds the soil microbes so essential to processing plant nutrients, recycles garbage & wastes, and gives jobs to a depressed area of NJ.

Well, there is a debate about the harmful effects of Miracle Gro. The problems are in the fact that it is synthetic and tends to easily leach into the ground water. Another reported problem is that people rely too heavily on Miracle Gro for their fertilizer instead of taking the time to amend their soil and adding organic nutrients and working it in. I don't remember where, but I read an article where a study was taken and found that people who rely on Miracle Gro developed very nutrient poor soil in a very short time. I also read another article that claimed that Miracle Gro is like crack for plants and that the plants actually become addicted to it and can suffer with drawl when Miracle Gro is withheld.
Anyhow, that's what I've heard. I only use miracle gro on occasion to give a particular plant that looks a little weak a boost. I choose to go the organic route with compost and manure.

You shouldn't eat it but I've been putting it in my veggie garden for years. I'm big, strong, and healthy. Its not organic though so if that what you want animal compost is what you need.

you can get like a plant substrate and make a nice layer below the gravel, another choice is to get flourish iron, or any other liquid iron supplement, which is basicly the most important supplement they need to thrive, some others they can get from your aquarium water.
