Sometime I forgot to shut my computer down when I go to sleep and let it run for a whole day. Will this damage the computer in anyway?

How long often should I shut down my computer?

There's no problem leaving your computer on for a whole day or even a whole year provided it doesn't have anything wrong with it (and if it does it'll fail anyway).

You probably should turn your monitor off though (or just set it to put the monitor in standby after a reasonable delay).

Yes it is ok to leave your computer on provided that the following are true:
A. You have a screen saver on your computer that way you do not have to worry about images from your normal desktop "burning" or being permanently implanted on your computer screen.
B. That you have a firewall installed on your computer system that way when you are away other people cannot get access to your system without your permission especially if you have a broadband Internet connection. Cable/T1/Satelite/DSL are all considered broadband Connections.
C. Your PC and monitor do not consume much power. Most computers and their monitors will take up less electricity then that of a 50-75 Watt light bulb.

You should shut down your computer whenever the following things happen.

A. You install or update a program and the software tells you to do so.
B. You are expecting a storm to occur and you do not want to risk destroying your computer.

I hope this all helps you out! Have a wonderful day/evening/night.

I leave my computer on day and night. I spent 6 months straight downloading a video from demonoid without shutting down. The only thing that may eventually die out is the power supply. But that doesn't happen for years. I wouldn't worry about it at all. PC's also require very little power consumption so no worries about electricity bills either. I leave my monitor on too!

I have my computer on an UPS and it runs all the time, going to sleep after an hour or so to save power and coming right back up. I think it was last turned off about two months ago. Of course, I use it at all kinds of odd hours.

nothing will happen. I turn mine off almost once a week. ( i do video editting and compressing a film takes sometimes 5-6 days )

The only thing you wanna payattention is the 'air condition'. If there is 30-50 cm gap between your computer from all sides , it wont be any problem leaving your pc on even more than a week.

Yes. Full Stop
Just dont keep high cpu consuming tasks running all the time. Eventually in the long term your cpu will start to slowly deteriorate. Sometimes some screensavers can also cause this.

Dont forget. Depending on how powerful you system is, you may get a very high bill..

I t will not hurt the computer as long as it is not kept in too high of temperature and you have a screen saver. It is better to leave your computer on or in standby mode. Excessively turning it on and off uses more energy and can wear circuits out faster do to the power surges.

Yes it is good for the PC if its left on and not switched on and off many times- Just see that you have configured your screen saver to come on after 10 minutes or whatever time period U want-from 5 to 15 minutes is good time configuration as this saves the monitor

It won't hurt a thing, Mine has been on for 8 months and is as good now as when I took it out of the box.
I do have Virus Software and I also run Spybot and Adaware once a week.

It's perfectly fine to leave it on. My PCs run for weeks at a time. Most PCs have a "hibernate" mode where they use less power. You can have them enter that mode after a specfic time period has elapsed without use.
