You can use screws and it will work just fine. Deckmate makes a very good coated screw with a lifetime warranty that will interact well with cedar. DO NOT USE galvanized as the chemical properties in cedar will break down the zinc and cause "bleeding" and you will eventually have to replace them.

I have built two cedar fences. Galvanized nails or screws will stain the cedar. You will get a dark stain that tends to run down from each nail or screw.
In Houston, TX they use to use aluminum nails but they are soft and difficult to drive straight. If you do get the aluminum nails driven into place, they do hold up pretty well.
You can now get stainless steel nails or screws that are much cheaper than in the past. If you want a really good looking fence, spend a few extra dollars and use stainless steel.
McFeelys.com sells a corrosion resistant steel screw. I don't know if they will stain the cedar but if you contact them, I'm sure they can tell you.

RE:
Should I nail or can I use screws to build my cedar fence?
I have heard that you should use aluminum nails when working with cedar. I do not like to use nails can I use screws or do they make aluminum screws?

I have built several wooden fences and they don't last primarily because the in ground posts rot, even red wood. The last one I built I used steel posts, they are the same one's used to construct a chain link fence. Fittings are available that you attach to the posts and used to support the 2x4 railings. Much better job. You will find the posts and brackets at Lowes or Home Depot. You do not have to use redwood ; if wood is not in contact with ground cedar will last as long and is cheaper.

Go to your local home improvement centre. They have cedar-coloured deck screws in different lengths. These are exterior screws and will not rust or stain your cedar and are colour-matched. Use short screws for the boards and long screws for the framing. If in doubt, ask their staff for help in selecting the right product.

Woody J is right, don't use galvinized. I don't recall seeing aluminum screws (they'd strip awfully easy). Stainless steel would work, but they'll stand out. I'd use exterior, coated decking screws. You should be able to find a few color choices that would blend in with the stain you'll use. If you're going to paint, it doesn't matter.

Screws are much better (you can remove them to make repairs) and they hold better, but remember to get galvanized screws so that they won't rust and streak the fence.
