This is the first time that I have ever installed a PCI card into my computer. I am going to install a PCI firewire card made by Syba. I have a Dell Dimension E510 with Windows XP Media Center. Can anyone give me some advice on how best to go about it or what to do or avoid so that I do not run into any problems?

Read the instructions that came with the card. It is (unfortunately) different for every card. Some require you to run an install program from a CD, then insert the card. Others require you to insert the card and then run the CD. Others require you to insert the card, let Windows install it, and then insert the CD when prompted by Windows to do so. Others require no CD, you just insert the card.

The main thing is be sure the computer is turned off when you are inserting the card...

Beyond that, just follow the instructions that came with the card.

Just be careful not to unconnect any wires that are in the way if you have to move them to get to the open pci slot.. Remove the screw for the pci slot area and the metal plate that covers up the hole, throw the plate away.. Carefully, place the card in position, line up the connectors, push lightly till it starts to go into the connector. Then give it a good push and "snap" it into place.. Put the screw back to the hold the card in.. Don't force anything..
