After hours of help from Netgear - I was finally able to connect to the internet from my wired computer.
I really know nothing about computers - so here's my question: do I need to keep the router
connected to the modem for my wired desktop? Will the laptop run at my son's jr. college that has wi-fi without the router, or does he have to disconnect the router and take it with him everytime he takes it to school? Thanks for your help!

Wireless connections work by picking up a special radio signal. In your home, that signal is broadcast by your router. The college may be set up so that it broadcast the same kind of a signal from an access point (a heavy duty router designed for dozens of users). If it is, he would not need the router. If not, then he would have to use the router to broadcast his own signal.

The only one who can tell you whether the college is wired for wi-fi is the college. It is different for each school. You need to direct that questions to the Admission people at the college. They will be able to answer it for you.

haha
-No the ethernet wire does not need to be connected to the laptop if the laptop if using the wireles router
-It does need to be connected to your desktop computer if your desktop pc does not has a wireless card.
-Your son will be fine with the laptop alone, he does not need to bring the router. The college should have wireless services, etc.
