first, you can give your baby water...but like all things, moderation is key.
second, the reason you can't give a baby honey is that it does cause botulism (food poisoning) in babies alot of times because their digestive systems are still not fully developed.
other things that are not wise to give to a baby under a year old: soda pop or any other carbonated drink, cow's milk, hard candies or hot dogs (choking hazard), raw spinach (again, food poisoning potential), and foods high in processed sugars (obesity dangers)
I am sure you are a great mom. If you have doubts about what the best food for your little guy is, you can contact your local WIC office (even if you don't get the service, they will help you with your questions) or the Cooperative Extension office in your county....most have nutrition classes.

Honey can cause a form of botulism in infants.
Water is fine to give your baby.
Foods with allergens that should be avoided:
Milk
Egg whites
Strawberries
Nuts or Peanut Butter
Fish (can contain too much mercury)
Broccoli, Cauliflower and other foods that can cause gas in adults are hard for babies to digest.
Start introducing solids with baby rice cereal, mashed sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas, and other things that are easy to digest.
You can start introducing baby food at any time between 5-9 months. I always waited until 7 months old. Breastmilk or formula have all the nutrients your baby needs before 12 months.
Remember to take it slow...a few bites of a new food is just enough to tell if your baby is going to have a bad reaction (check for signs of irritability, any skin problems, or changes in bowel) without putting your baby's digestive health in danger.

Water? You're confused. What do you think formula's made up with?
Honey, unpasteurised cheese, milk other than breastmilk or formula, very spicy food, nuts, anything with raw egg in it such as mayonnaise.
Other milk would give them stomachache because they can't digest the proteins in it when they're tiny, the unpasteurised stuff, eggs and honey is because of the (small) risk of salmonella in it which is dangerous for a baby to get because they can get dehydrated so quickly. Very spicy food would upset their stomach, nuts are a choking hazard. (And peanuts in any form before 1 year old are thought to increase the risk of them developing a severe allergy).

I have never heard about not giving your baby water-on the contrary, I was told that in the summertime, when it gets really hot to offer your baby some water to avoid dehydration.
the foods I was told to avoid: nuts, fish, honey, peanut butter, eggs, cow's milk... some for reasons of allergies and some for reasons of baby not being able to digest it yet!

I love these questions. Not that you have done or said anything dumb but this society is just retarded. This of what it was like 100 years ago. Water is fine and absolutely necessary. Honey is the only, ONLY food on the entire planet that never goes bad. I have always fed my kids whatever it is they could safely eat (physically) at the time. Baby food is good for a while but think how boring that has got to get. Give you little one some variety. Having some baby food and give a little mashed potato too. Try some other things also. You not in any danger of hurting your little one by letting him have some variety in his diet.
