Floppy drives have a mechanical head that has to move (like the arm on an old record player) in order for it to read a disk. Over times, those arms will get out of alignment and the drive will stop working. Probably the most commonly replaced part in a computer (or it was until in 2-3 years ago when memory sticks began to replace floppies).

You will probably need to replace the drive with a new one. They use cost in the $20-40 range. There are two cable on the back, and usually four screw that hold it in place. The average person should be able to change a floppy without needing help. Or you can pay about $30-50 in labor to have it done. (Or offer your favorite "geek" a McDonald's meal and they will do it for you).

but it probably is a mechanical problem and the drive will need to be replaced.

Hi. Put in a floppy and use "Windows Explorer" to see if it can be read. The drive or disk may be bad. A new drive is cheap.
