The first problem is you are buying lexmark printers. Lexmark absolutely sells thier printers cheap, however make up the money else where, thin ink. cost per drop a lexmark cartirdge averages 20-40% more expensive than the next costliest printers to run, HP. A great deal of technology goes into a cartridge. Ink itself is rather cheap, what you are paying of is the nanotechonology on the print head as well as the intricate electronic circuitry. Put out a little more money, buy a better printer like a Kodak easy share all in one, and you fill find the cartridges are substantially cheaper ($25 for a set which will print 200-400 pages) Also note that a new printer comes with trial cartirdges, which are at most 1/4 full, which in the end is not saving you any money whatsoever.

I am not sure about in the UK, but here in OZ we have generic ink and it does a great job, just as good as original. My reason for this answer is that I have tried refillable ink cartridges are really bad and messy.
I just did a google search for (ink cartridges uk) and found plenty of vendors who sell them. If you don't want to shop online have a look at your local pc shop for generic brands.
They don't void the warranty on your printers as some people think!

Canon printers, i`m in Nottingham and use an epson and canon printer for my photography, the canon one is an ip2000 and 3000 and i use compatable inks it costs me £11 to £13 for a complete set and the quality is everybit as good as the originals, epson printers u tend to have to swap chips out of 1 cartridge to another and the quality not as good on compatables. HP and Lexmark are amongst the most expensive anyway. regards fez

LETS GO CHEAPSKATE!!!!!!!!
Heres how I found my current printer.....
Search "Continuous Ink Supply System", find out which printers can take it, then select your printer. My 'cartridge full' of ink costs 40 PENCE
Heres a link to give you the idea.....
http://www.inkexpress.co.uk/index.php?p=ecom&dowhat=fullinfo&prodid=972
Costwise, a cartridge contains about 15 ml of ink. Ink for these systems is £20 for 600 ml, thats 40 cartridges worth, a cart is about £5.00, so thats £200 worth of cartridges, less the cost of the complete kit, and by the time you have used the ink that comes with it, you have £100 in your pocket

There is no such thing as a refillable cartridge, all cartirdges are designed for single use only.
That being said, all cartirdges are technically refillable. Even the ones that you have. The trick is to keep the cartirdge in good working order by running a print head weekely and refill the cartirdge yourself when you ink is low, not empty.

I know nost of the Hewlett Packard cartidges are refillable. I just took advantage of a promotion here that gave you free ink for both black and color. I am on the same boat with you. Ink is just too pricey and I hadn't purchased some in a while to avoid the cost, but when i saw the sign for their refill capability, I was relieved and the price is practically cut in half. good luck

If most of your printing is black and white get a good laser printer as suggested.. If you do a lot of color get an HP that uses individual color cartridges.. or keep what you have and learn how to fill them... buy a pair of gloves to hide the ink you spill all over your hands...
