I checked it out of the library, and enjoyed it. While I liked The Simarillian, it was very hard to follow, and this story fleshed out the tale of Hurin and Turin. However, what actually annoys me is that, if memory serves, Christopher Tolkien has spoken out against the movies -- which is the reason why LOTR is so popular now in the first place! If it weren't for the movies, something like this may not have even found a publisher, much less sold so many copies. The irony hasn't escaped me.

The Simarillion, Lost Tales and the Children of Hurin are put together from bits and pieces of Tolkiens notes, unfinished works etc. They make up more of a reference of Middle Earth than an actual tale. That being said they are great reference works of Middle Earth.

I didn't buy it, but I did borrow it from the library and read it. Did I feel I was wasting my time? No, not at all. I'm a hard-core Tolkien fan, meaning I'll read anything he reads.
The Children of Húrin wast made up of parts coming from the Silmarillion, the Lost Tales, and the Lay of the Children of Húrin. Other new things were added, and I since I'm am fond of Túrin, the book was accepted by me.

I bought "Lost Tales" which effectively is random scribblings by the man put together by his son (cashing in obviously). Felt exactly the same about it as you do about this new one. I didn't buy any more - only bothered with The Hobbit, LOTR and The Silmarilion

I loved the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.I read each of them over a dpzen times! I tried three times to read the Simmillion and couldn't get into it. So I didn't buy this one and I am glad I didn't.
