Just say "I'm so sorry about your dad, if you need to talk to anyone, I'm right here". Something to that effect. Speak from the heart. And don't say "I'm sorry for your loss", that's something your accountant might say. Make it more personal.

I've unfortunately been to quite a few funerals for friends' parents. The best thing to keep in mind is that people grieve differently. There are distinct stages of grief, such as anger, but the ways that people progress through the stages varies dramatically.
To be most helpful, you may want to draw your friend aside, and let him know that you're there for him, whether or not he wants to talk about anything. Just knowing that you were there will one day be of comfort to your friend. Sit with him, and once you've expressed your own sadness, try not saying anything at all, just let him release whatever emotions he is able.
Bring a sympathy card along with you, with a written personal message to your friend's family. But your first obligation should be to your best friend.

Thing is your friend probably knows you dont know what to say.right now, telling him god has a reason will only make him bitter and be mad at God depending on his state of mind and his maturity.
I'll suggest when you see him just give him a hug and ask if theres any thing you can do to help.
Be around him as often as you can but dont smother him incase he would prefer to deal with it on his own.
And then do stuff you know will cheer him up.dont ask what him what they are,he mightnot like you feeling sorry for him.
Goodluck

All you can do is to say "Sorry" to him . Tell him to stay strong and let him know that his dad is with God now. There's really nothing much you can do but you can always keep him company.

Just tell him that you are sorry for his loss, and if he needs to talk, give you a call.
