The Americans didn't like the idea of a Communist backed Government in Afghanistan. They therefore backed the "freedom loving" Taliban.
After the Taliban came to power America decided that they were not, after all, the ideal party to be in Government and so asked NATO to sort out the mess they had created.
In the summer of 2004 the announcement was made on both sides of the Atlantic that a "war on drugs" was about to commence on Southern Afghanistan. The Taliban announced that this would be met with fierce opposition by them.
The British Government in it's infinite wisdom despatched 1500 troops for this war on drugs. Of this 1500 only 600 were combat troops. The British Government then expressed "total shock & amazement" at the resistance shown by the Taliban.
There has been a 300% rise in opium production since the war on drugs began. My son is currently in Afghanistan his comment is "there are fields of poppies as far as you can see - but we can't touch them".
Couple that with local villagers being paid by the Taliban to go out and take pot shots at British troops with a bonus for a kill and you begin to understand why so many British troops are getting just slightly pissed off with the whole thing.
The 2nd world war took six years. We've been in Afghanistan the same length of time with no end in sight.

It is about oil. But please don’t underestimate the importance of the war. Oil and other fossil fuels are the only reason you and I have electricity, cars and the energy to power yahoo answers.
Countries like Iraq that have non-capitalistic views would not allow the west access to all the oil reserves they have. Iraq and the Arabian countries were planning on selling the remaining oil at a higher price to the highest bidder, there by ruining our energy superiority over the rest of the world.
If this had happened counties like India and china would soon become the new supper powers. So you see the war was a necessary evil. And our troops are not dieing in-vain, but they are giving their lives so we may have electricity and all the other comforts we enjoy!
too bad about the future though: as we fight to save the dwindling remains of a power sours that’s fast disappearing and destroying the climate, other countries are developing more sustainable energy sources; and to them the future will belong!

Afgan is still valuable for oil resorces. It is only a transit centre for opium and drugs through Pakistan. The internal strife in Afghanistan is between religious fundamentalists (terrorists) and moderates for control over Afghan administration. The West is giving arms to both and moral support to poor moderates.

Opium damn fine stuff and worth a packet, they need your troops to help harvest it. They will be as high as a kite by the time they get back.

Well considering there is no oil in afghanistan,
And the opium goes to the european markets, not to the US.
I don't see either as the reason we went into afghanistan.

Opium can always been grown.
Oil is of a finite quantity.
Make your own mind up on which would be more valuable to an economy.

Um, do you remember 9/11? Even the most shifty liberals still see the connection between 9/11 and Afghanistan!

The Afghanistan Gov. invited the U.S. military in to clear out the terrorist training camps, they did. The camps were dispersed, and there is no more organized focal point for them, they are scattered and unorganized now.
