This is perfectly proper unless it is a public building or a church. The exception would be if the gentleman is involved in a military exercise, in which case the hat would not be removed, even during emotional contact.

yes. Whenever I've been in an intimate situation with one of the Buckingham palace guards, they always wear a hard hat, so it must be one of those quirky British things
