It depends on what kind of Harley you are looking for.
A plain 883 Sportster runs around $7000 while the top of the line Ultra Classic Electra Glide costs well over $20,000

A new one at a dealer is usually cover 10,000 if you get a larger one. Sportsters can be had for around 8500,00 depending on dealer. However a sportster is just that a smaller frame bike with a gob of power. Very uncomfortable to ride for one and two up is terrible. I reccomend the the Hertiage Softail series. Larger bike and easier to ride.
If this is to be your first Harley purchase i would reccomend a used one in good shape. A used Harley usually is a good one to trade in for a new one at a Harley Dealer. Its like trading cars A Ford trades good at a ford dealer they usually don't like taking a chevy because they don't sell to many chevies at a Ford dealer.

The average cost of a Harley is approximately $1,500 dollars over invoice. Even more for the expensive models. That means you pay the dealership $1,500 dollars in pure profit just for selling you the Harley, which is already overpriced to begin with. If you can afford to squander that much money to buy an unreliable status symbol, go for it. Otherwise, go with an equivalent metric. They're cheaper, more powerful, more reliable, better looking, better performing and cheaper to ride and maintain, but you don't get to wear the Harley boots and jackets and t-shirts and gloves, and all the other crap that Harley riders spend their money on to be accepted in the Harley club. Be smart - buy a metric, and be YOURSELF.
