St John's wort is generally known best for its use in treating depression and anxiety. In Germany it outsells Prozac, and research has shown that it is at least as good as Prozac for treating mild to moderate depression. It is also a very good antiviral herb, and helps improve immunity a little. It is great for colds, and possibly helps HIV infection (The research is a bit questionable, but worth a try). The oil is well known for its healing properties - particularly as an antimicrobial vulnerary (wound healing) Cattle that have large amounts of St John's wort in their diet become sensitive to light (photosensitive). This is possible, but rare in people. St John's wort increases the clearance of certain other drugs from the body, so shouldn't be used with warfarin or lithium. It clears the Pill out faster too, so can cause breakthrough bleeding. I don't think there are any reported cases of pregnancy as a result of taking SJW, but I guess if there is breakthrough bleeding, the risk of pregnancy is increased. It can increase serotonin levels in the brain, so should not be used with SSRI antidepressants. To be safe, it shouldn't be used with any other antidepressants except if under the supervision of a qualified herbalist. The dosage for tablets containing 1.5g of hypericum (SJW) is 2-3 tablets per day. Higher doses for short lengths of time are possible, particularly for acute viral infections.

The most important thing I can add to what everyone else has already said is don't take St. John's Wort with oral contraceptives. It generally renders them ineffective.

I have taken it when I was feeling a little under the weather. It seems to help me... even if only a little.
But, make sure that you don't take it without talking to your doctor... St. Johns is known for flushing peoples systems. Many times it will completely cancel out any prescriptions that are being used.
Hope this helped :)

I know one person who was prescribed that for depression but it did not help (because that person did not take it for long enough time).
I would suggest homeopathy or EFT and Reiki.
